How to Prepare Your Property Before a Video Shoot

September 4, 2026 by

A well-prepared property shoots faster and edits into a noticeably better final video — here’s what actually makes a difference, including a couple of technical details most preparation guides skip.

Before the crew arrives

Clean each room, declutter surfaces and put away personal items (photos, mail, toiletries). Open curtains and blinds for natural light, and turn on all interior lights even during the day.

The lighting detail that actually matters

Daylight coming through a window measures around 5600K on the colour temperature scale, while most interior bulbs run warmer, around 2700–3000K. Mixing both in the same shot creates a visible colour cast — part of the room reading blue-white, part reading orange — that’s harder to correct cleanly in editing than it is to avoid on-site. We’ll often ask to turn specific lights off or supplement with our own colour-matched lighting rather than fight a mixed-temperature room in post-production.

Furnished vs. unfurnished

Furnished properties benefit from simple staging — made beds, straightened cushions, cleared kitchen counters. Unfurnished properties, common for builder inventory, don’t need staging but should be swept and free of construction debris; see our Builder & Developer page for how we handle under-construction and sample-flat shoots specifically.

Outside the property

If drone or exterior footage is planned, make sure vehicles are moved from key sightlines and gates or entrances are accessible.

A quick day-of checklist

Secure pets in a separate room or off-site, set the air conditioning to a comfortable, consistent level (running units can hum on camera audio during interior segments), close toilet lids and cabinet doors, and switch off ceiling fans unless you specifically want them running for ambience. If a neighbour or building management needs advance notice for a drone flight, arrange that a day or two ahead rather than on the morning of the shoot.
